Section 508 requires that federal agencies and private organizations that receive government funding make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessible to people with disabilities.

WHAT IS SECTION 508?

Formed in 1998, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was created to provide people with disabilities access to ICT, regardless of whether they work for the federal government or not. ICT includes software, hardware, and even digital documents that any federal agency procures, and uses.

Amended in 2018, Section 508 especially mentioned the use of WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA conformance levels.

  • Government agencies
  • Private federal contractors
  • An organization that bids for government contracts

508 STANDARDS FOR WEB CONTENT

To meet Section 508 compliance requirements, your website, service or product must meet WCAG version 2.0 Level A, AA success criteria at minimum. If you have taken a step ahead to already adopt WCAG 2.1 – a round of applause for you.

WCAG 2.1 is backward compatible with 2.0 which means that your products which are conformant with 2.1 standards automatically comply with 2.0 to help with ADA compliance.
