Understanding Success Criterion 3.1.5 Reading Level

Content written on your website is simple and clear to help all users easily understand it. Ensure that additional content is available to assist users to understand complex content.

Official Requirements

Success Criterion 3.1.5 Reading Level (Level AAA): When text requires reading ability more advanced than the lower secondary education level after removal of proper names and titles, supplemental content, or a version that does not require reading ability more advanced than the lower secondary education level, is available.

Why is it required?

People with reading disabilities may find it difficult to understand complex web content that is more advanced than the lower secondary education level. Therefore, writing simple and clear content will help all users from college professors to someone with 9 years of schooling to understand it easily.

How do we fix it?

  • Provide a text summary of complex content in addition to the original content
  • Ensure that your content has well-organized sections, paragraphs, and heading structures
  • Provide a spoken version of the text
